An acclaimed international violinist is suing a famous fitness coach over an incident during a Pilates class that she says derailed her music career.
Maya Meron, 43, needed hospital treatment for a broken left elbow and serious abdominal injuries after an exercise machine at Heartcore studio in Hampstead allegedly collapsed while she was using it.
The professional violinist and viola, who has performed with top orchestras and conductors around the world, says she has been left unable to play and is having difficulty caring for her one-year-old twin sons.
Ms Meron is pursuing a damages claim against Heartcore Fitness Limited, the premium fitness brand founded by Jess Schuring.
Mrs Schuring, also known as Jessie Blum, counts Victoria Beckham, Elle McPherson and Robbie Williams among her clients, and is said to have been the Duchess of Sussex’s favorite London Pilates teacher.
The alleged incident took place in March 2019. Ms Meron, who put Osbornes Law in charge of pursuing her case, signed up for a 6pm pilates class as she regained fitness following the birth of her twins . The mother of three says she took a seat on a Coreformer exercise machine and was told by the instructor to adjust the locking bar.
After the warm-up exercises, Ms. Meron was instructed to adopt downward dog, putting extra force on the bar she had adjusted.
After a series of repetitions of the exercise, the front support and the locking bar collapsed forward while she held them, said Robert Glancy KC, in legal applications in Central London County Court.
Ms Meron said: The force of the car not stalling catapulted me forward. I felt my elbow snap over the sound of the crashing car. It’s a sound I will never forget.
Meron has appeared at the BBC Proms, performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under renowned British conductor Sir Simon Rattle, was a member of Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and was a member of the acclaimed Paavo Jrvis festival orchestra. .
He says elbow surgery, reconstructive procedures on his abdomen, as well as persistent wrist pain and reduced finger strength have brought his globetrotting music career to a halt.
I’ve had to turn down almost every job offered to me because the more I play, the worse my condition gets, he said.
I know I have a long way to go, I have long term damage to two nerves in my left arm and cannot separate two fingers on my left hand, but music is my life and I will keep up with treatment so that I can get back on the global scene in whatever playing I can.
I have experienced the most touching support from so many amazing musicians around the world. Some of the orchestras I’ve collaborated with have even offered me the chance to play only part of a concert program, just to be able to go back on stage to play with other musicians again. This is the goal I aim for.
Meron added: It’s not only my music career that the accident took away from me, but also my ability to independently care for my twin boys who had just turned one when it happened. For months I was no longer able to hold them and take care of them like a mother should. This is the moment I will never go back.
I have long-term nerve damage to two nerves in my left arm and cannot separate two fingers on my left hand. The accident not only took away my music career but also my ability to care for my twins independently.
Rob Aylott, a personal injury lawyer at Osbornes Law, said the case is expected to go to court in January next year.
My client was enjoying a glittering career that was unceremoniously cut short by a trip to Heartcore.
We have evidence that the studio’s Pilates machines were poorly maintained and not fit for purpose. It is fitting that Ms. Meron is bringing this lawsuit against a defendant who refuses to stop believing that he has done nothing wrong.
The case is expected to go to trial in January next year. Heartcore Fitness, which is believed to be preparing a defense in the case, was contacted for comment.
